The Narrows, on the Willamette River above Willamette Falls and West Linn, is still one of the best kept paddling secrets close to the Portland metro area.  A few minutes of paddling takes you from the rush of the city to Rock Island and Little Rock Island natural area, where the river has cut its way through basalt formations and left beautiful islands where Madrone, Oak, and Cottonwood trees cover the hillsides and Camas, Larkspur, and wildflowers carpet the grounds. Prepare to see osprey, eagles, blue heron, many species of water birds, and beaver on this paddle.

Champoeg State Heritage Area is a jewel set just southwest of Wilsonville on the Willamette River. Besides being rich in local, state, and national history as the seat of the first provisional government on the West Coast, it’s also a great paddle destination for beautiful, serene water.  As you paddle down the tree lined corridor of the Willamette, you’ll share the river with Bald Eagles, osprey, and Great Blue Heron as they fish for their dinner, and view remnants of Oregon’s shipping history along the banks.
